The Road goes ever on and on ... Day 101 (601)

China remains the only country in the world practicing a "zero-covid" policy. I found a description of some of the ways this policy is implemented quite interesting. In some towns, entire neighborhoods or districts have been evacuated to form buffer zones through which the virus should not be able to spread. Some schools remain open, but only for teachers and students who do not leave campus but instead live there. People are tested frequently. One driver for a ride-sharing app reported being tested 90 times in just seven months. The father of a one-year-old son reported that the baby had been tested 74 times. And if you just want to get away for a while? First, you'll have to undergo 21 days of pre-departure quarantine at your own expense. This does not sound like a world in which I'd want to live.

Classes in Chicago Public Schools are canceled next Friday to allow families more time to get eligible students vaccinated. On the same day, city employees may leave work two hours early to get vaccinated ahead of the city's vaccine mandate's taking effect. Oroville, California, just 90 miles from the state capital in Sacramento, has declared itself a constitutional republic not bound by state or federal covid mandates. Legal experts say that this tactic does not work legally, but some in Oroville tout the message it should send to state and federal powers that be. Two hyenas at the Denver Zoo have tested positive, the first time covid has been identified in hyenas.

On the covid-meets-football front, Green Bay Packer Aaron Rodgers has confirmed that he has not been vaccinated against covid. He says that the team knew of his status. If so, they did not follow NFL protocols when they allowed Rodgers to hold press conferences without wearing a mask. Both Rodgers and the Packers are likely to be fined by the NFL; it is doubtful that the NFL could suspend Rodgers for longer than the covid policy requires him to sit out. On a sports radio program, Roberts explained, "I realize I'm in the cross-hairs of the woke mob right now. So before my final nail gets put in my cancel culture casket, I think I would like to set the record straight on so many of the blatant lies that are out there about myself." He said that he is "not an anti-vax flat earther " but is a "critical thinker." He said that he had been taking monoclonal antibodies, ivermectin, zinc, vitamin C, and hydroxychloroquine. Think about that critically: the only item in the list that is an approved treatment for covid is monoclonal antibodies.

Another short post, but much of the news I read was same old same old. Russia continues to set covid records, for example. I'm also resting my thumb, which feels much better today than it did yesterday. Cortisone is my friend.

Ninety tests in seven months sounds a lot but I would be on for that with three visits a week to care homes.
